Christmas Stockings are believed to originate from a folklore tale about St Nicholas which tells of a poor man who lived long ago with his three beautiful daughters. He had no money for them to marry, and was terribly worried about what would happen when he was gone. St Nicholas, hearing of his plight and knowing the old man would not accept charity, decided to help in secret, throwing three bags of gold through an open window in the dead of night. One landed in a stocking that had been left to dry by the fire, and they all lived happily ever after! The oranges we now put in stockings are said to represent the golden gift of St Nicholas.
